WHEN THERE’S NOTHING LEFT TO BELIEVE IN YOU CAN BELIEVE IN ANYTHING

The western world is driving itself half mad. All the old certainties are gone. Past belief systems are becoming a minority indulgence that were supported in place by archaic fake news, but at least they formed a relatively stable moral platform. Now everything is up in the air.

We were told that you make your own reality, empower yourself, demand better from everyone and everything, everyone is to be super-confident and have the supreme right to whatever opinion he or she desires, no matter how bizarre.

The human right to be exactly as you are and demand that everything be as you wish shall be the whole of the law. There shall be no contradiction of this right under pain of public prosecution and punishment. We no longer need any roots that hold us all in common, there is no requirement for solidarity of purpose, ethical code or moral base. All is up for question and up to you for your individual acceptance or denial.

And from this chaos of individuality was supposed to come... what?

Did anyone know, or was it simply assumed we would all simply be made supremely entitled and all would be well?

But what arrived?

Cultists, Flamers, Alien abductions, Lizard Elites, Satanist Cabals, Pedophile Politicians, QAnon?

Then the backlash to get others to toe the line and fall into line:

Cancel Culture, Social Media Censorship, De-platforming.

Suddenly it was time to put the freedom genie back in her bottle. But she had grown so bloated she could no longer fit.

Pandora refused to shut her trap... or her box.

So here we are... swirling kaleidoscopically within the ever-shifting miasma that is Babel World.

Convictions and counter-convictions. Head to head wars of the virtually braindead.

Logic need no longer apply.

Having a good argument based on evidence only leads often to an argument that was meant to be a discussion but became a war of assertions. I am right superseded let’s talk this over. You are wrong is often the first sentence in response.

My cult says... My guru says... My gut says... My party says... My beliefs say... That you are wrong.

Think my way... or stay away.

The ground has shifted under our feet in ways that, flawed though things undoubtedly were in the past, it rarely did.

We exist within a whirlpool of conflicting ideas, notions, opinions, views and assertions. Most pick one that’s convenient, compelling, convincing or simply de-confusing and run with it, disavowing all others.

Fewer than ever before trust officialdom or mass media, though too many still hang onto the belief that these sources still guarantee a little communal stability. Though their past lies are legion far too many still desperately hope their mainstream TV or newspaper are genuinely trying to relate facts. Of course they are delusional in this, these two sources deal solely in manipulated drama... not facts.

Traditional belief systems created a matrix where confusion was held at bay. Many of those traditions were oppressive forms of elitism, it’s true, hangovers from paternal and maternal times of mass obedience to the prevailing power, whether that was church, monarch, state or feudal ownership. The pattern of life remained relatively fixed for generations before the industrial revolution set the wheels of change in motion. And led us eventually to here.

Science, some political demagogue, a spirit you channeled, an alien being, the latest conspiracy theory, a voice in your head, that we are under the control of lizards, that Bill Gates wants millions to perish and that if you get vaccinated you will certainly die...

When there’s nothing left to believe in you can believe in ANYTHING.
