They were following their strong instincts of course and who could blame them? The western world has many attractive qualities for such as they.
For the high-flyers in business, the artists of many categories who hoped for wider or even global fame, and for the young in particular, the attraction, indeed seduction of the West was placed very high on their respective and highly self-interested proclivity registers. This proclivity is so powerful it clearly overrules all else, including their adherence to less selfish motivations, such as one that most Russians prize highly, that of patriotism and putting their nation before their person.
Western politicians, press and media are bringing a kind of stardom to these people now, those who “question” Russia’s actions in Ukraine, or even condemn them. Though I would suggest you will never hear the true cause of their angst, those feelings of betrayal that all their hopes and dreams of more fame, income or access to the western “good life” lie in tatters.
These relatively few Russians, among them the always discontented young of a certain selfish, self-absorbed disposition, will certainly be seen demonstrating their fury.
It was always so. The same phenomenon has been seen time and time again. The vast majority get on with their lives, taking whatever hardships come for the good of the entire country and its populace… while predominantly the city dwellers, the intelligentsia, the sensitive liberal elites of the art, literature, cinema worlds bemoan that which affects their privileged lifestyles and might possibly tend to restrict their precious selves from expressing their precious thoughts.
These over-sensitised worms are beginning to turn on their own nation now.
