It was a time when to speak was a potential crime. Your very thoughts could betray you, or so it seemed. Day had been turned to night and the whole world was upside down, wrong was right now, blindness brought correct sight and deafness made you blessed.
Who were your friends and who had turned into enemies? Did you bow to the accepted or walk into a wilderness of truth? These were the unasked questions that tortured those still awake and which had been consigned to yesterday by advocates of today.
Some asked whether those who had lost the war were now leading the fight against those who had been victorious. All was confusion to those who still insisted that some reality lay unrevealed. The blissfully ignorant received all available plaudits from others who stood with eyes shut and hands on ears.
And from above came the all-pervasive message delivered by an almost telepathic insistence:
