WHO PROVIDES THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STORY ON UKRAINE THAT THE WESTERN MAINSTREAM REFUSES TO?

Eight years ago, when I first became intrigued by events then going on in Ukraine with what appeared to be totally chaotic events on Kiev’s Maidan Square, I could discern few others taking a similar interest.

That such anarchic violence could be occurring without much by way of commentary outside of a few mainstream news entities barely mentioning it seems odd looking back.

However, over time I began to realise that those who I took to be of the same mindset as myself, that is generally on the left of the political spectrum, were decidedly in two minds over what was going on there.

Many of them, I came to understand, viewed the violence through the lens of a negative view of Russia and in particular of Vladimir Putin. I had no strong feelings on this score initially, neither was I inclined to favour one side or another. I had one wish and that was to discover what the fundamentals were behind what was going on and get as close to the reality behind the quite incredible events I was witnessing.

This intent took me on a four year journey during which I saw the number of those taking the same path gradually increase to the highly significant number now clearly dedicated to the same task.

In those early days and for those four years until the war in Syria diverted my intention I observed how western mainstream media was loath to publish anything which might cast the Kiev leadership in a bad light. The mounting number of civilians killed in eastern Ukraine by the shelling of their communities within the region known as the Donbass going completely unreported in the West moved me to change from being neutral on the conflict to wishing to make up for this discrepancy.

This was a relatively lonely endeavour at first though with time the numbers attempting this same task grew and grew until today, when I have returned to the Ukraine topic once again there are now a number engaging the issue in this way that it now serves to at least partially and to a much greater extent than ever before make up for the extreme partiality on Ukraine within the mainstream.

I would like here to mention the front runners in this endeavour which I have come to trust as those who are most genuine in their wish to present the reality of events in Ukraine, the backdrop to the various motivations, goals and purposes of individual events, nations and their geopolitical significance.

John Pilger has been investigating and reporting on the foreign policy decisions made by the political elites of the western world for over fifty years and is one of the most respected commentators by those not within the state and corporate news world and undoubtedly by many within who find themselves unable to say so for reasons to do with their security of employment.

These days it is not uncommon for new sources, independent of corporate and state media to appear on the internet, many of them on YouTube. The channel below by the name of ‘REDACTED’ has high production values and has recently been delivering videos regarding Ukraine. REDACTED — Inevitably I will have failed to mention other notable contributors seeking to make up for the enormous gaps which together we see as a constant within western mainstream news broadcasting on geopolitical issues involving western national interests. However, I hope those listed above will provide an introduction to many others, including the many unsung but persistent individuals who have given so much of their time to the task on Twitter, Facebook and many other social media sites.
