UKRAINE: DO YOU CARE ABOUT COMMITTING ATROCITIES WHEN YOU SEE YOUR TARGET AS A SUBHUMAN RUSSIAN TRAITOR?

For eight years, from the Spring of 2014 to the present day, Monday June 13, Ukrainian forces have fired military projectiles of one kind or another into the villages, towns and cities of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions of Ukraine.

These mortar shells and missiles were fired at random hitting whatever stood in their path, often high-rise residential buildings, occasionally hospitals or schools and if neither of these family homes, urban streets or centres. They killed or maimed thousands over the last eight years.

Unless you have been paying close attention over these years you will be unaware of any of this. All that you will tend to remember over those years from your news broadcasts and newspaper articles is that somehow or other Russia is causing problems for Ukraine.

As an observer of all this from the start I looked for any reflection of what was being done to the inhabitants of these regions within western press and media and found virtually nothing. It was neither politically, career-securing nor socially advisable to report what was being done. To do so would initiate comeback of one sort or another from superiors or from some exterior government-related source.

Most of the time it is likely that massive self-censorship was in operation. Journalists and commentators knew which stories were acceptable and which were not, which views could be aired and which not, what might get you praise and a promotion and which a stalled career or a speedy exit from your place of employment.

Perhaps today where the Ukrainians who have been pummelling Donetsk and Lugansk regions which they have held under siege for eight years hit a maternity hospital in the Vishnevsky district of Donetsk. Reportedly the Ukrainians are using shells from a massive French self-propelled howitzer (CAESAR) with a calibre of 155mm.

Will today be different with western mainstream newsrooms featuring the blurred bodies of the mother and child killed? I doubt it. The ‘war mode’ mentality right across both the political and media elites in the West is all-pervasive… and to be straightforward about it, has been so for the past eight years. Why should anything change now?

Therefore the shelling of the civilian population of Donetsk by the same Ukrainian forces that have done so with the implicit support of western states will without doubt continue.

Perhaps you are asking, along with the obvious question of why none of the shelling of these civilians was reported over the last eight years, how could Ukrainians come to callously target civilians like this?

The answer lies in the fact that Ukraine is two nations in one. The largely Ukrainian-speaking West looks westward and many of those there also look toward the Nazi-supporting legacy of Ukrainian nationalists. The largely Russian-speaking East looks eastward and most of them recall their liberation by the Soviet Red Army with pride.

To the most rabid of the modern Ukrainian nationalists Russian speakers are traitors to Ukraine, sub-humans who ought to be eliminated from the borders of Ukraine and by one means or another. They seek only one language to be spoken in Ukraine regardless of how many generations the Russian-speaking population have existed in Ukraine.

To those infected with Nazi-legacy beliefs those in the East whom they refer to as ‘Moskals’ (Russians) have no right to be there. They dream of a time when they have been either killed or removed. They deem them, as the Nazis did, as subhumans only worthy of death.

This is the evil root of the events of today and the unconscionable support given that evil by the western powers, it political and media elites who share in the guilt by their crimes of omission and commission in fuelling these atrocities and failing to report them.
