Regime change wars were costing indebted western nations far too much.
Iraq cost the USA an estimated $3 trillion and probably much more. The bill for Britain was at least 8.4 billion GBP. To 2018 the amount the USA spent in Afghanistan was $737,592,000,000. This has of course risen daily since then.
So no more of that was affordable. Bombing countries into submission was a cheaper option.
After Afghanistan and Iraq the tack changed toward bombing campaigns similar to that used against Yugoslavia. Thus Libya was bombed into the fragmented land it is now where slave markets exist among the debris of one of the richest countries in Africa.
But even bombing costs a fortune. Each bombing run costs tens of thousands of dollars.
The West is assisting Saudi Arabia in its bombing campaign in Yemen with logistical support and advanced weaponry. This campaign is not going well, even with the overwhelming advantage of the Saudis backed by the USA and multiple nations in Europe. It is surely costing the Saudis millions.
Other, cheaper means of affecting regime change were needed.
In Syria other tactics were deemed necessary to effect regime change. Apart from funneling money and weapons to doubtful proxies a relatively new tactic was developed which has expanded into a modus operandi used within the currently operational regime change playbook. This tactic evolved from an earlier system of persuasion known as PsyOps (Psychological Operations).
PsyOps have a long history. One of the first if not the very first was used during World War II when a small group was set up that broadcast false information about the sex lives of Hitler and his most elite generals and supporters. Churchill was minded to shut it down as “not cricket” until he heard just how successful it was being at undermining morale among Nazi high command. He then gave them the green light to carry on.
The ‘Office of Strategic Services’, based on the British Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) and Special Operations Executive (SOE) was the precursor to the CIA and continued the tradition founded by the Brits of spreading false information, creating counterfeit documents and seeding disinformation through newspaper articles. These means of propaganda and subversion of foreign governments proved very successful.
Psyops: ‘Psychological operations (PSYOP) are operations to convey selected information and indicators to audiences to influence their emotions, motives, and objective reasoning, and ultimately the behavior of governments, organizations, groups, and individuals.’ (Wikipedia)
It was decided to use a two pronged attack in Syria, one would be physical and the other psychological. Within the physical attack prong everything possible would be done to destabilize the country through the use of all anti-governmental group operating there, including those the USA pretended to be at war with. (‘The War on Terror’)
Operation Timber Sycamore was the primary physical endeavor to weaken, fragment and bring ungovernable chaos to Syria in hopes of bringing down the president and all forms of governance there as had been done in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya.
Operation Timber Sycamore: ‘Timber Sycamore was a classified weapons supply and training program run by the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and supported by some Arab intelligence services, such as the security service in Saudi Arabia. Launched in 2012 or 2013, it supplied money, weaponry and training to rebel forces fighting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the Syrian Civil War. According to US officials, the program was run by the CIA's Special Activities Division and has trained thousands of rebels. President Barack Obama secretly authorized the CIA to begin arming Syria’s embattled rebels in 2013.’ (Wikipedia)
The psychological prong of the U.S. war against Syria had its antecedent in Iraq. Teams there were engaged in manipulating public perception back home, manipulating events, exaggerating, embroidering and faking events. It was not rocket science to realize that shocking stories that pulled on idealistic heartstrings would work best in the psychological ops.
Thus, when the reality in Syria needed some tweaking to make sure the narrative as spun by U.S. and other elites in the West was accepted and to manipulate consent for a brutal war that was causing utmost misery across Syria... the humanitarian death industry was set up.
This would produce all the material necessary to keep western audiences well snowed and compliant to western elite wishes to endlessly prolong the suffering of the Syrian people.
The task was to convince western audiences that there was only one villain operating in Syria and that was the regime change target, President Bashar al-Assad. All others, even heart-eating and child-beheading “rebels” were to be seen as innocent bystanders and heroic soldiers of freedom battling a demon president. The task required a constant stream of suitable news.
How was this to be accomplished?
As we have seen, all the precedents had already been set. Disinformation with emotional punch was the key. And thus The White Helmets were set up along with The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (one balding, middle-aged man sitting in his semi-detached house in a suburb of London). These, along with groups of anti-Assad activists would provide the flow of disinformation necessary. No conflicting information was to be allowed from any source. If any conflicting information was discovered it would be nullified by a set of psychological operations designed for them alone. (‘Assad Apologists’, and so forth).
The manipulation of information was to be all. This “information” was to be weaponized to the limit and across all channels of communication from the New York Times to the CNN studio to the United Nations and of course to every elite politicians and commentator out there across the western world.
And it worked. Just as the similar campaigns had worked to demonize regime change targets had worked previously. No one could say a word that contradicted the flow of assertions designed to manipulate western citizens without being called an ‘Assad Apologist’. (Note the treatment of Tulsi Gabbard in this context.)
The technique of channeling misinformation also had a root in the embedding of journalists after the Vietnam war. They had been a very uncomfortable thorn in the side of the U.S. elites previously as they had reported quite accurately on how badly things were going. This could no longer be allowed. The elites in charge decided they must control the flow of information so that it supported the narrative they wished the general public to believe.
The CIA’s ‘Operation Mockingbird’ was another root of the all-encompassing psychological manipulation of information that has become the norm in today’s America.
Operation Mockingbird: ‘The CIA currently maintains a network of several hundred foreign individuals around the world who provide intelligence for the CIA and at times attempt to influence opinion through the use of covert propaganda. These individuals provide the CIA with direct access to a large number of newspapers and periodicals, scores of press services and news agencies, radio and television stations, commercial book publishers, and other foreign media outlets.’ (Wikipedia)
The cherry on the top for U.S. elites was the advent of social media along with the extra compliance they received from mass media after 9/11.
There was to be no contradicting official U.S. sources or intelligence agencies after 9/11. This became unthinkable. It felt unpatriotic. Bush had said “You’re either with us or against us” and extremely few were brave enough or foolhardy enough to fight for both sides of every story, especially as the corporations owning their broadcasting business would be extremely unhappy if you did.
The USA was at war with anyone or any nation that said anything untoward about it criticizing it in any way. No name would go un-flagged for attention if they did. So none within the mainstream at home or among allies ever dared again.
This meant the social media addicted populations of the West were sitting ducks for the sucker punches about to come out of Syria.
The White Helmets became the “heroes” distributing the “evidence” of Assad’s “atrocities”. Children were the primary source of emotional sucker punches time after time. The “heroes” were seen saving them from destroyed building hit by that “evil” Assad’s barrel bombs. One little boy in particular famously made an American news anchor cry. They were on the scene when “chemical weapons” made little children whimper and cry in agony. And they were supported by reports from anti-government activists to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights who was duly channeled to a waiting, disgusted, western world.
All this was to be backed up by the West-based NGOs and Human Rights entities, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty, the OPCW, UNHCR and as seen in the Ukraine conflict by the OECD.
The “something must be done” knee jerk response from western populations who seemed to have terminal amnesia regarding all the lies they had been told by the same kind of people who were now “informing them” was breathtaking. Precisely nothing had been learned. The level of gullibility that arose was and is utterly astounding in this context.
As in Yugoslavia where the Serbs were demonized as the sole villains in a civil war, so Assad was demonized. And as you will know, so was Vladimir Putin. Anyone who casts any doubt on any state narrative would quickly be negated by some epithet or other. (‘Putin’s Puppet.’)
Nothing was to get in the way of western citizens getting their heartstrings plucked mercilessly.
Nothing was to get in the way of the narrative that MUST be accepted... or else.
