‘What a tangled web we weave when we practice to deceive.’
It is almost certain that Donald J. Trump has not the remotest inkling of his constant reliance on lies, deceptions, misinformation & fake narratives.
I detect no self-awareness on his part regarding his extreme economy with the truth.
And I am sure even now he has not even the beginning of any awareness of how he threw away the much coveted status of a second term as president.
Imagine he had been the figure of stability the people of the USA had desperately needed him to be when the coronavirus started to hit them hard. Imagine the post-9/11 respect that George W. Bush received before he took America into its disastrous regime change wars.
What did Donald do instead of being a source of strength for the people of the USA, instead of reflecting the seriousness of the situation by a sober stance which bowed to the science and the counsel of the virologists around him?
He created a nightly mess of ludicrous ‘positive thinking’ that made him seem completely out of touch with reality. The virus was not much worse than the flu, it would “probably go away by the summer” and maybe injecting disinfectant might “cure” it. And that’s before we get to his refusal to wear a mask. This latter exhibition of petulant irresponsibility in and of itself without doubt costs hundreds if not thousands of lives and permanent organ damage for tens of thousands more who managed to live through Covid-19.
Trump appeared to be in complete denial... but it was clearly a state designed to cover himself at all costs with an eye to how he saw his reputation, no matter what happened to Americans as a whole. He clearly needed to minimize the effect of the pandemic to this end. Not be the strong focal point there to give Americans the confidence to see this horror through.
Having said all of the above, it was not his response to the virus that
cost him votes among his base. But I am 100% certain it cost him the
very many votes he would have gained if he had been truly presidential
and the strong central point of leadership Americans always crave in
times of crisis. It would not have required very much from him. Only
some sign of empathy, a sober approach, a nightly resemblance of
seriousness which signified he was attending to making things better.
But he never even approached such a stance... in breathtaking
incompetence verging on extreme idiocy he deflected the votes of the
undecided away from him in droves.
I have not even a shadow of a doubt that if Trump had even simply been there providing moral support, even while saying little other than that he was with the American people in this their time of struggle and heartbreak, that he was going to do everything in his power to get them all through this together... that would have been more than enough. Instead what we got was a nightly circus of the insane where not one iota of empathy was shown.
This has been both Trump’s strength and his weakness. He comes across as very similar to the gruff mid-western middle-aged male who rarely shows any emotion but tends to speak in rather take it or leave it terms. Those who are of this kind of mentality, whether in the mid-West or otherwise recognize the similarity with themselves at some level. But those of a different mentality, to a fair degree more cerebral or emotional look for more nuance and empathy in those who command the heights of political life. They look for sobriety, steadfastness and responsibility for being strictly factual.
Trump lost (if he ever had it in the first place) all sense for what was required when the pandemic broke. He was left with his weapons of blame. It was all China’s fault, or the WHO. He seemed to take the virus as a personal insult.
It may seem callous to say so, but the virus was in fact a golden opportunity for Trump to shine as president. He was looked to as the Commander in Chief to command and instill confidence. He never even began to fill that role.
All he provided, day after day and night after night was an erratic “show” where he literally unmasked his true self, devoid of any fellow feeling, saturated in self-love and personal ambition that excluded all else.
All else but endless vain nonsense never venturing far from his goal to look praiseworthy and be successful in deflecting any possible negative from his own glorious self.
It was a pathetic charade from beginning to end.
And now we have to suffer four years of another self-interested, self-glorifying political thug by the name of Joe Biden along with his glee-of-insanity imbued vacuous partner and Hillary Clinton stand in, Kamala Harris.
All because of the deranged mentality of a man who clearly refuses all advice and was constantly determined to prove how much of a “stable genius” he is through his constant production of fantastic untruths.
Thank goodness he and his tangled web of lies will soon be gone.
Leaving the stage open for much more sophisticated examples of the very same.
