The above is the thorny question that successive U.S. elites have wrestled with, especially since 9/11.
The answer for the vast majority of them is clearly no, that to gain 100% security, considering that the USA is a prime target for terrorists, the USA needs total control globally, or as near as dammit. Due to having this viewpoint virtually all else we are seeing now in regard to U.S. aggression, diplomacy-free treatment of other major powers and a continuance of its regime change foreign policy no matter what or how.
Even before 9/11 the spoken or unspoken belief was that our world would be best managed, disciplined, judged and manoeuvred by the western powers, and predominantly by the USA with the UK being its strongest ally helping to reinforce this status. Western liberal values, the self-awarded unquestioned superiority of western “civilization” with its “democracy” and freedoms was regarded by its elites as the epitome of human endeavour.
Post 9/11 the above views sharpened to a never-before-conceived level of focus underpinned by fear, rage and an unending commitment to achieving the goal considered the inherent destiny of western elites, to steer the entire world in the direction they considered optimum for others and very certainly optimum for them.
The winning of absolute security for itself and overwhelming power over others, whether economic, political or military, for the USA remains the unquestioned goal of U.S. elites to this day. No matter what setbacks may occur, even to the level of humiliating defeats such as the retreat from Afghanistan, there can be no withdrawal from the dedication felt to achieve the goals set after 9/11. In fact, the dedication is likely to become even more supercharged than before and the war being waged by the USA, for it most certainly is a war, will be escalated to an even greater extent.
The essentially racist, patrician and patronizing view of the rest of the world held by U.S. and UK elites in particular, boils down to the long-held and deeply ingrained concepts of British superiority and U.S. exceptionalism. The elites of those two nations are completely unable to overcome these concepts which permeate every fibre of their being, they are weaned on them as they are on their mothers’ milk. They have no concept whatever of any other way to be, think or behave. These racist viewpoints are exemplified in the long list of pejorative epithets by which they have framed those they consider beneath them. ‘Johnny Foreigner’, ‘Nig-Nogs’, ‘Niggers’, ‘Coons’ ‘Chinks, ‘Coolies, ‘Apes’, ‘Ragheads’, ‘Dagos’, ‘Dinks’, Gooks’ and so on.
With this attitude of total superiority and exceptionalism is it any wonder that the sense of entitlement among western elites has reached the levels seen today? The history of the long line of elites they sprang from displays the same characteristics then as perceived now. The genocide of the native population of the USA, the enslavement of millions to generate immense profit, the colonisation of half the world, subjecting it to the total domination of western nations. The kind of attitudes we see now among western elites has a long and inglorious history.
In this scenario, with self-regarding views that constantly reinforce a sense of total correctness of conduct and a need to maintain control of the world for its own benefit, no matter what this entails, up to and including mass slaughter, destruction and chaos, how can western elites ever conceive of NOT ruling the world? Their perceptions are all focused outward, never inward. What possible reason could they have for looking inward when they “know” they are always in the right, imbued with the god-given responsibility to guide the world toward its ideal destiny using the ultimate in tough love?
These viewpoints as expressed above cannot be denied. Their expression on a daily basis is so very obvious. The targets identified by western elites as their primary enemies and adversaries have been telegraphed to their populations without any room for doubt. They are at war and the reasons they are at war are as described above. And the elites holding these views are relentless in pursuit of the goals they have set themselves, of total global dominance.
Without total global dominance, there can be no ultimate protection of western elites and their continued and overwhelming influence. That overwhelming influence is required to have worldwide oversight and an ultimate deterrence against any emerging threat and the ability to snuff it out as close to the source as possible. On land, in the air, on the sea and in space the USA and its allies desire total dominance, full spectrum dominance and the power to devastate anyone and anything at a moment's notice as a sign and symbol of their complete and unquestionable dominance.
So what are the chances of the USA feeling secure without ruling the world and completely dominating it as described above? Obviously those chances are extremely low to absolutely non-existent. This is why you undoubtedly will see no end to the western elite push to undermine and weaken those who threaten that dominance using any means possible.
The myopia involved is as total as the self-belief of western elites that they cannot be anything but totally right in all they think, say and do. The idea that their “sworn enemies” have no intention to destroy them, their influence and power then subjugate the world to tyranny simply never enters their minds. They conceive of themselves, as said above, to be the crown of creation… therefore all others must be potential or actual devils seeking to harm the obvious good for all that are western liberal values and all the other social and governmental totems the West holds dear.
China is the prime target in just the same way as the Soviet Union was the prime target previously. China, however, is not the Soviet Union. It is a much more formidable challenge. With the most successful economy in the world and one continually on the rise and with western economies sluggish at best, with the Chinese population displaying great unity while the West is riven by discord, with China investing and making friends where the West is losing them… things look very bleak indeed for the wannabe hegemonic dictators and global manipulators of the USA and western world.
The ultimate irony, a tragic one, in all of this, is that the USA, UK and to a lesser extent, their allies, are fighting an enemy that does not exist. The existential threat they conceive as real is a fantasy, at least in the extreme form in which they visualize it. Certainly they are threatened regarding their power, wealth and influence, their markets will shrink, their voices will be weakened, their threats will reduce in their ability to instil fear and obedience… but the end of the world and specifically of their security will not arrive as a consequence.
China, Russia and the vast majority of states unwilling to be dominated by western interests mean no harm to the United States, the United Kingdom or to any of their allies. Why would they? They require stability to trade, to establish partners with whom to trade and to build networks of transport where the products of trade can be delivered in safety.
The USA, UK and their allies have built a propaganda facade of unwarranted fear and non-existent danger, imaginary papier-mache dragons and a grouping of lesser demons they have installed in their own fevered minds in garish 3D. They scare themselves into committing atrocities with these ever-present, ever-threatening mirages which lead inevitably to their murderously disastrous foreign policies.
The dropping of all this self-inflicted fear-imbued fantasy appears beyond them as is the concept of reaching out to build bridges with those they confront with flaming torches.
The USA and its allies COULD feel secure and safe without ruling the world. That is the true answer to the title of this piece. But the thought of this potential reality cannot be allowed to permeate their minds, so opaque with fear of loss, demonization of imaginary foes and outdated concepts are their minds. It is certain that they will never even approach the remote possibility in their minds that this is a conceivable reality.
The very existence of western elites as they now are depends upon power. Its abuse is the very avenue through which they have maintained themselves in place. This continuing abuse sustains whatever power and the influence they continue to have. That is the true reason why they cannot change and why the true road to security for them is out of reach.
It is by their own actions, refusing to relinquish any degree of power or influence that western elites will ensure their own demise. In this totally intransigent way they will continue to instigate and propagate a war they will not win and was certainly never going to bring them the security and safety they crave.
They doom themselves therefore to an inevitable irrelevance. And this will make them the authors of their very own insecurity.
