'THE GREAT GAME', LONG PLAYED BY THE WEST... CONTINUES

‘The Great Game was a political and diplomatic confrontation that existed for most of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century between the British Empire and the Russian Empire, over Afghanistan and neighbouring territories in Central and South Asia.’

With the statement above from an interview conducted in the last few days with Josep Borrell, we see the reaction of European elites in Brussels to events in Afghanistan. We see not a trace of self-reflection regarding the entire folly of the western military intervention policy which has fractured the Middle East in recent years. Neither is there a trace of contrition, not one iota of guilt and nothing at all to indicate any taking of responsibility for the entire twenty-year tragedy which has taken place in Afghanistan.

What we see is a determination to continue with the same arrogant interventionist policy that has personified the aggressive pursuit of western self-interest for two hundred years and more, the continuation of ‘The Great Game’.

To provide a fig leaf to hide its true, economic motives, the same facade of concern for human rights and democracy will be deployed as was seen during the Cold War and subsequently in all other regime change wars of choice conducted by the West.

The key words in Borrell’s revealing sentence above are ‘intervene’ and ‘to protect our interests’. Here we see the true motives involved and the blatant disregard for international law which forbids arbitrary attacks on sovereign nations without an attack by them first.

No mention is made of human rights or democracy it’s true. These are tacked onto illegal acts of interference as they take place or as “justification” afterwards. These are used, along with ‘freedoms’ purportedly achieved for those in the attacked or invaded nations to soothe and tamp down possible objections at home and within the so-called ‘international community’. The ‘international community’ being solely those nations that can be counted upon to support the murderous activities of predominantly the USA and UK in pursuit of their ‘national interests’.

It is all part of ‘The Great Game’ played by the western elites for the sole purpose of preserving and expanding their interests. Their interests are of course founded in both wealth and influence. Maintaining their grip on power and increasing it if possible facilitates holding onto and expanding their wealth and influence. It is a cycle of predation jealously guarded.

The West will not slacken their hold on their ‘vital interests’ until the emergence of an equal and opposite force such as that which arose when the British lost their empire to populations who forcefully rejected and finally ejected them. That force is rising fast in the names of China and Russia, predominantly China. China’s economic growth rate and its coinciding rise in influence presents the greatest threat to the western empire ever seen.

The attacks of various kinds on China seen from the USA, the UK and some others are directly related to the potential loss of all income, trading networks, status, influence and power as found under the heading of the West’s ‘vital interests’. The West, mainly the USA and UK are fighting a war against what they see as an existential threat by China and Russia. It is not a military threat, but an economic one. An economic threat that also threatens all those other factors listed under ‘vital interests’. They know their entire house of cards will fall as one if it comes to the tipping point where Chinese and Russian influence eclipse their own. Income, influence, trade, status and power will all reduce as one.

Of course, it needn’t be this way. The USA, UK and others could choose to cooperate with China and Russia. These great nations could work together embracing diplomacy and doing all they could to build bridges for the benefit of all. It is patently obvious that this is desperately needed, after all, the threats facing mankind from climate change and future pandemics are huge.

But the West is choosing instead the path of greatest conflict, of war by other means and military intervention wherever it deems it necessary. Diplomacy is prostituted as a tool for gain on one side only on one hand and in the other the threat of economic and financial terrorism along with slanderous propaganda on human rights.

The path western elites have chosen is one they have trodden for two centuries and more now. It is a path they have become unable to steer themselves away from and are now squandering the chance to do so now over Afghanistan.

They will clearly continue down this ruinous policy of increasingly divisive tactics and policies, along with innumerable unethical practices including murderous military interventions which have been long associated with ‘The Great Game’.
