Due to the present war mode affecting western media in its attitude toward events in Ukraine we really have nothing meriting the description ‘journalism’ on this subject within the western mainstream.
If not that then what DO we have?
We have professional “journalists” prostituting their profession on a daily basis and subsequently breaking the bond of trust they have with their readers and viewers.
They have decided on a career whose purpose is to inform. To inform of the reality before them to the best of their abilities. They have purposefully abandoned the very essence of their career. What they purvey now is a totally skewed portrayal of events.
Take for example a series of articles concerning a major nuclear power plant under Russian occupation in Ukraine. In a highly convoluted form these articles seek to skirt any mention of the Ukrainian military bombarding the site. The authors seek by excruciatingly convoluted means to give the impression that somehow or other the Russians are either bombarding themselves or the Ukrainian shelling of the plant is justified due to assertions made by those Ukrainians and subsequently accepted as gospel truth.
This kind of logic is the stuff of future nightmares where only a partial and highly biased version of reality is conveyed. This invites disaster. It also invites mass casualties, death and destruction.
For over a year now western press and media has been conveying a completely false portrayal of the conflict in Ukraine. They have sought constantly to give the impression Ukraine was winning or at least had a strong chance of winning. This was never even a remote possibility. Russia was ALWAYS going to win as even a cursory examination of the situation would have revealed. But western political elites could not tolerate the idea of Russia achieving a quick victory. This eventuality was deemed completely intolerable. Tens of thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands were therefore consigned to their deaths to achieve goals pertinent only to the geopolitical ambitions of the western powers.
Being convinced that assuming a war mode stance was the only viable posture for them in the face of western state dedication to pushing the war endlessly forward, every mass media title and television channel committed the cardinal sin of their profession, skewing the facts to suit.
Ukraine could do no wrong and all that Ukraine said would be accepted as fact without question. Even the most outrageous and obvious lies were to be lent utmost credibility in order to help it and injure Russia. In a similar vein to using anti-government activists in Syria as sole founts of acceptable information, any activist or authority figure on the Ukrainian side had carte blanche to say whatever he or she dreamed up and have it transmitted as news. Nothing from the other side that couldn’t be used to degenerate and undermine it would see the light of day.
This one-sided set of narratives were displayed across all western mainstream media in diverse forms on a daily basis serving, where believed, to thoroughly condition readers and viewers into a Pavlovian state of mind which could be manipulated at will.
Ukraine was to be urged on by this incessant propaganda to deliver ever more cannon-fodder to the front. For the western powers the longer this process went on the better as they saw things, this in the hope that something could be saved from the mess they had created by goading Russia into this conflict and the failure of their economic attacks upon it for doing so.
The Americans and British in particular, though assisted by the European Union nations, really did everything possible to ensure that Ukraine would fight almost to the very last Ukrainian.
This process is of course still underway. Without any doubt when Russia’s final victory does occur, postponed by the vast mounds of Ukrainian dead a in a few months time, the western political elites will have already prepared a cover story. The most likely lie prepared has already been partially rehearsed. In relatively recent times an article appeared saying that the Pentagon was unhappy with the information Ukraine had been supplying regarding the course of the conflict. It was said that they knew more about the disposition of Russian forces than they did regarding those of Ukraine.
I suspect the above will be the backbone of the public relations defence the western powers will use to excuse themselves from blame for arguably the greatest geopolitical blunder and subsequent debacle ever. It was their fault. They didn’t give us the accurate information we required. They kept too much from us and therefore we were helpless to assist them as well as we wished to.
On the other side Zelensky will say the West didn’t give him the degree of help he needed, that the numbers of this or that weapon system was inadequate. However, I think you know which side of this argument will receive the most attention and publicity in the West. Just as the western press and media swung into action to provide the required propaganda in favour of Ukraine at the behest of their state authorities, now, in this changed situation they will swing 180 degree to support the West AGAINST the now re-framed Ukraine.
Such are the vagaries of a press and media profession in the West which has grown far too close to those who now can exert enormous influence over them.
