THE AUTOMATION OF EMOTION IN THE TIME OF THE PLAGUE

Those who wish to sell us an infinity of products require to largely transform us into automated buying machines ever responding to their stimuli.

There will be pleasures within that new world to habituate us to it.

Many (prior to Covid) have had most of their minds and bodies well within that brave new automated world, attracted almost magnetically to malls and arcades where the stimuli brighten their eyes.

But what dies when those artificial lights go on in our brains. What is shoved into the corner of our brains when the new and flashy excitements enter? Where are the more natural activities and interests excluded to and can they persist there in their new cramped quarters, will they be sustained, or will they die from lack of sustenance?

Have an increasing number of us already been transformed into virtual cyborgs simply awaiting the technological innovation that will inject the magical dust of nanocomputers into them?

Where did the more natural emotions of past times go? Sublimated into the digital world we are being ushered into now by the fears of personal contact engendered by Covid? Online is becoming ubiquitous. It is isolated from dirty and dangerous reality, from infections other than those of a viral nature. We are completely socially distanced from dangerous reality in a world of mechanical and electronic beauty where reality is whatever we want it to be.

Welcome to the paradise of the virtual, sanitized existence offered you in your comfortable isolation. here are all the glitzy goodies awaiting your order. Amazon and Alibaba are your new world, your very own universe of product, your fantasies brought to animated life before your eyes wet with joy. yes, you are still flesh and blood... for now.

Soon you will have your income delivered free of charge. In an echo chamber continuum you can close your black drapes and be warmed by the glow of your screen 24/7 where night and day traverse your consciousness like the those in the film ‘The Time Machine’ in super-speeded time. Reality will be what you wish it to be. All time and space is now yours... in splendid isolation.

You COULD learn about medieval England, about the travels of Marco Polo, you could delve into the mysteries of Quantum Mechanics or read Shakespeare. But you will much more likely play violent online games with all your “friends”. It will be completely up to you within the world as you want it. Your main real world contact however will be your meal delivery drone hovering patiently and flashing its tiny light gently at your window. Will you have a pen name for it?

The time of contact is ending in an intimate embrace of technology where we can feel as antiseptically clean as our hand wash. We want to feel safe again. To raise our children without fear of “the outside”. To calm ourselves with the knowledge we can see it all on-screen anyway and the exercise machine which we sanitize with spray is all we need anyway along with that Ultra-HD “reality” of things we could never afford or have the possibility to see ‘in real life’.

We only await the implants in arm or brain which can link us directly to the virtual reality without need of heavy headsets or uncomfortable spectacles or the need for any screen. We can then choose whichever reality we wish to enjoy today, a meadow, a galaxy far away, a desert sunrise or Milky Way spectacular. Or, of course a blood-spurting, adrenaline-surging, hyperventilating war zone.

It’s all up to you in your virtual brain-capsule. Whatever gets your automated emotions refreshed.

Just make sure you eat your delivery of sustenance before it gets cold and you get tempted to give a review which disappoints ‘Diana’, your ever-loving drone...
